Museums

Air Force Space & Missile Museum: 449-4444. Focuses primarily on the early unmanned space program, with artifacts from the ’50s and ’60s and a rocket garden. The only way to visit the museum is through Cape Canaveral Then and Now bus tours from Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex. The bus leaves at 12:50 p.m. daily. A combo-pass costs $55.99 plus tax for adults and $39.99 plus tax for children 3 to 11 years and includes two-day access to all Visitor Complex exhibitions, shows, IMAX movies and Astronaut Hall of Fame. Visitor Complex hours are 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. during winter. Closing hours vary at other times of the year.

Alma Clyde Field Library of Florida History: 435 Brevard Ave., Cocoa Village, 690-1971. Runs in conjunction with the Florida Historical Society. Research library includes exhibits of Florida history and historical documents. Book and gift shop. Hours: 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. Admission: free

American Police Hall of Fame and Museum: 6350 Horizon Drive, Titusville, 264-0911. 50,000-square-foot facility allows visitors to sit in an electric chair, lie under a guillotine, sit on a police motorcycle, shoot an actual police weapon and fly 130 mph in a helicopter. Facility also has a state of the art indoor shooting center. Open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily except for Christmas and Thanksgiving. Admission: $12 for adults and $8 for kids ages 4 to 12, age 3 and under are free. Seniors $8

Astronaut Hall of Fame: 6225 Vectorspace Blvd., Titusville, 269-6101.World’s largest collection of personal astronaut memorabilia. Dedicated to Mercury, Gemini and Apollo space programs. Also features historic spacecraft and simulator rides. Admission: $17 plus tax for adults; $13 plus tax for children ages 3 to 11. It’s also featured on a maximum access, two-day ticket to the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex which cost $38 plus tax adults and $28 plus tax for children 3 to 11 years plus tax. The maximum access two-day ticket also allows access to the main complex, including IMAX films, KSC bus tour and all other exhibits and attractions. KSC is off SR 405 in the Titusville area. Astronaut Hall of Fame is on SR 405 five miles south of the KSC Visitor Complex off site and open 10 a.m. to 6:30 p.m

Brevard Museum of Art and Science: 1463 Highland Ave., Melbourne, 242-0737. The county’s only fine arts museum has five galleries where rotating exhibitions by international, national and regional artists are displayed. The museum is also host to cultural lecture series, a book club, jazz performances, children’s activities and art classes. The Ruth Cote Clemente Science Center has colorful, hands-on exhibits for children. The Renee Foosaner Education Center offers studio classes. Hours: 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday; 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday. Admission covers entrance to galleries and science center: adults, $5; seniors 63 and older, $3; children and students with ID, $2; children younger than 2 and museum members, free. Brevard Museum of History and Science: 2201 Michigan Ave., Cocoa, 632-1830. Collecting museum also brings in traveling shows with accompanying text panels. On permanent display are a Florida timeline, a nature center with 22 acres of trails and a recreation of the famous Windover Dig, which unearthed 7,000-year-old remains of prehistoric man. Hours: 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Saturday; noon to 4 p.m. Sunday. Admission: adults, $6; seniors 62 or older and military with ID are $5.50; students with ID are $5; children $4.50; children younger than 4 years are free.

Brevard Veterans Memorial Museum: Veterans Memorial Center, 400 S. Sykes Creek Parkway, Merritt Island, 453-1776 or http://members.aol.com/vetcouncil/index.html. Education museum houses artifacts from all wars in which the United States has fought, from swords and cannon balls to World War II rationing stamps and V-mail and much more. Exhibits are rotated to provide new displays. Admission: free

Exhibits presents history of surfing through old surfboards, magazines and photos, surf music, collections of old items related to surfing and exhibits about national surf champions Kelly Slater, the late Bruce Valuzzi and inductees into the East Coast Surfing Hall of Fame. There’s also a small theater that shows old surf movies. Hours: 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily. Admission: $2 donation requested, but not required

The Enchanted Forest - Located on the north side of State Route 405, 1/2 mile west of U.S. Route 1, in south Titusville. You will descend 15 to 20 feet from the desert-like Scrub on the ancient Atlantic Coastal Ridge into the shadowy, moist Mesic Hammock with its huge canopy. The interrelationship of elevation, soil, water, nutrients, and botany becomes evident.

Grant Historical House - 5795 South US Highway 1 Grant, FL 32949-2106 This home was built in 1916 and has been completely restored. It houses a collection of antiques and furniture that capture that period in time. It is a monument to the early pioneer days

Harry T. & Harriette V. Moore Memorial Park  - 2180 Freedom Avenue, Mims 32754 Phone: 321-264-6595, Fax: 321-264-6596 Opened on April 9, 2004, the 5,000 sq ft Cultural Center is located on the property of the original Moore family home site and is universally accessible. Dedicated to preserving African American history, it is a repository of Moore family artifacts, historical documents, and currently features a timeline of strategic events of the pre-civil rights era beginning with slavery.

Explores history of Eau Gallie and the Rossetter Family, social and business leaders in the area during the 20th century. Gardens available for weddings. Liberty Bell Memorial Museum - 1601 Oak St., Melbourne, 727-1776 or visit www.honoramerica.org. Run by Honor America. Contains artifacts and facsimiles from important moments in U.S. history, such as the Dec laration of Independence, the U.S. Constitution and a full-size replica of the Liberty Bell. Permanent exhibits range from Revolutionary War period to Operation Iraq. Hosts military concerts and presents patriotic events. Hours: 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays. Admission: free

North Brevard Historical Museum - 301 S. Washington Ave., Titusville, 269-3658. Operated by the Historical Society of North Brevard. Houses historic items dating from 1890 to the 1980’s. Hours: 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. Admission: free

Two Feathers Gallery Museum: 833 E. New Haven Ave., Melbourne, 733-1227. Collection of American Indian jewelry and artifacts, Western artifacts, and cultural and spiritual myths and practices. Hours: 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday. Admission: free

U.S. Space Walk of Fame Museum: Searstown Mall, 3550 S. Washington Ave., Titusville, 264-0434 or visit www.spacewalkoffame.com. Nonprofit museum established by space workers in December 2001. On display are rare photos, space patches, pins, space hardware, flight suits, shuttle tiles, bronzed handprints of Mercury, Gemini and Apollo astronauts, and numerous scale models of aerospace vehicles and facilities. Hours: 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday, noon to 5 p.m. Sunday. Admission: free

Valiant Air Command Warbird Museum: 6600 Tico Road, Space Coast Regional Airport, Titusville, 268-1941 or visit www.vacwarbirds.org. Walk around a 30,000-square-foot hangar and see warplanes from before World War II, a C-47 from the D-Day invasion, a restored Wildcat from the bottom of Lake Michigan and a present-day  F-14. Theatre

Brevard Theater Ensemble - first professional storytelling ensemble in the state of Florida, and has been dedicated to serving the Space Coast since its beginning in 1988.  The members of the Ensemble have performed for more than 200,000 children and adults in Florida, South Caroline, California and Georgia.  They've been on live television, and performed weekly on WFME (90.7 Orlando's NPR) National Public Radio for 3 years.  They've performed at Disney's EPCOT Center and Nickelodeon Studios.

Cocoa Village Playhouse - Built in 1924, the Aladdin Theatre was constructed in the Italian Renaissance style popular during that era.  In the 1940's the theatre was a movie house known as the State Theatre.  Today, the Cocoa Village Playhouse, restored to its original beauty, is host to many plays and musical productions

Gleason Auditorium - The Gleason Performing Arts Center is a theatre-style, multi-use facility for all varieties of professional and community productions, as well as large-scale meetings, lectures, and video-conferencing.  Florida Tech College Players: This student group produces shows in Gleason Auditorium at Florida Tech. Playwrites Workshop of Brevard - A community outreach program of Brevard Community College, this program solicits original one-act plays by area playwrights. The group meets monthly for readings of members’ plays and mounts three community productions of original one-acts a year. Surfside Players -  This busy 45-year-old community theater produces five shows a year, including comedies, musicals and a drama. It also has a summer production of an original play by a local playwright. It runs Surfside Youth Players, which has children’s acting classes and at least two annual children’s productions. Theatre Company of Palm Bay - This young organization is gathering acclaim for its creative and artistic productions in a small lecture auditorium on the Palm Bay campus of Brevard Community College. Titusville Playhouse, Inc. - This community theater produces a full season of dramas, comedies and musicals. It presents music programs by local and national musicians. Music

Brevard Chorale: was started in 1966 by Dr. Tom Whiteside and has been bringing people of every age, life experience and vocal background together to sing for the pure joy of singing. Since then, the Brevard Chorale has had several conductors, including Larry Boye, Mark Hanson, Claire Baggarly and Vern Boushell.  Membership is made up of male and female; voice ranges from first soprano to bass. They perform three or four concerts each year.  More than 80 members of all ages form this community chorus. It is a function of the Brevard Community College. Brevard Community Chorus and Orchestra: This high-quality organization brings together more than 100 voices in concert with professional musicians for music by Beethoven, Handel and Mozart. Performances are at the King Center for the Performing Arts. Call 433-7385

Brevard Symphony Orchestra  Conducted by Christopher Confessore, this 47-year-old organization and 100-plus-member professional orchestra offers six symphonic concerts at the 2,000-seat King Center for the Performing Arts in Melbourne. Free concerts include the Fourth of July at Front Street Park in Melbourne, holidays and an autumn family event. Presents annual fifth-grade concert in partnership with the Brevard County School Board.

Harbor City Harmonizers  The Harbor City Harmonizers, under the direction of Duane McCarter, is a men's a capella chorus from the Melbourne Chapter of the Barbershop Harmony Society. We perform publicly as a chorus and with quartets. Additionally, the Harbor City Harmonizers has several quartets, as well as the entire chorus (depending on the type of performance your organization prefers), available to perform at various functions in and around Brevard County, Florida, both for community service and for a fee at private gatherings. The Melbourne Municipal Band   Made up of 100 retired professionals and advanced amateurs. Performs free concerts, primarily at the Melbourne Auditorium, 625 E. Hibiscus Blvd., Melbourne. Space Coast Flute Orchestra: This organization features about 42 musicians who play a wide collection of flutes, ranging from piccolo to standard C flute and a rare double contra bass flute. Space Coast Jazz Society: The society meets in the afternoon second Sundays for live jazz performances, at the Cocoa Beach Country Club. Annual events include a picnic, Christmas Party and benefit. Space Coast Pops -  This 20-year-old professional organization is conducted by Robert Coleman of the St. Louis Symphony. The organization offers a four-concert subscription series each year at the 2,300 seat Merritt Island First Baptist Church and other free concerts throughout the year. It sponsors the Brevard Young Performing Artists Competition. Broadway Bound Dance Centre: This group presents performances throughout the community and works with the Moscow Ballet when it comes to the King Center. It is based at 1270-A Lake Washington Road, Melbourne. Call 259-4778

Galmont Ballet Centre for Dance Education: The center, which is home to Brevard Ballet Theater, presents two major productions a year and educational outreach programs. Imperial Dance Company: The performing arm of the Dussich Dance Studio, this group selects one nonprofit group each year for a “Sharing Through Dance” fund-raiser/performance. Membership is by audition only from students of the Dussich Dance Studio. Call 452-2046

Kaliko’s Polynesian Dancers: The group performs throughout Florida for major hotels, corporations, home parties and children’s birthday parties. It includes male and female fire dancers, percussionists and Polynesian dancing and is based in Indialantic. Call 984-2789.

Paul Stella Productions: The group presents annual ballroom dance exhibitions featuring amateurs and world-champion ballroom dancers. The exhibitions benefit a local charity. Call 777-1212
